In terms of condition, we have two types of resin of P. atlantica (Mount Atlas Mastic resin-Pistacia atlantica) in Iran:
- Dried
- Liquid
Now you may be wondering if Persian Turpentine and the resin of P. atlantica are the same!?
The liquid state of the resin of Pistacia Atlantica is called Persian Turpentine (Mount Atlas Mastic Liquid).
Product: Asafoetida Suppliers and Manufacturers
During the extraction process, some impurities enter the resin of P. atlantica, and after their separation, Persian Turpentine is obtained.
Note: According to the weather conditions of the region where the resin of P. atlantica is found, the process of extracting the resin of P. atlantica may take between 3 and 5 weeks.
Product: Galbanum resin
If you intend to mass buy Persian Turpentine (Mt Atlas Mastic Liquid) or Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG), you will surely lose your bulk purchase if you do not use the following two tools.
- A lot of information and experience to grade different Saqez and to recognize their quality
- Knowing the fraudulent methods used by some sellers to sell all kinds of Saqez.
The concern of a large number of pharmaceutical companies and international traders in recent years has been the purchase of Persian Turpentine.
Product: Tragacanth gum supplier
But the question is, what are their concerns?
In Iran, different types of Pistacia atlantica species are under protection. For some years, to protect the life of these tree species, the government did not allow extraction teams to exploit them.
In this case, to continue selling the Persian Turpentine, fraudulent sellers use numerous deception techniques. for instance, they import resin of P. atlantica from other countries and clean it from natural impurities, then after combining it with the Persian Turpentine which had been extracted and stored in the past years, the buyer’s order will be prepared and ready to send out for them.
All of this Persian Turpentine is not extracted from the Pistacia Atlantica trees (Mount Atlas Mastic tree) in Iran, and the fraudulent seller sends this combined turpentine to the buyer.
In addition to these, the resin of P. atlantica that fraudulent sellers import to Iran from other countries is of very poor quality. With these interpretations, it is clear that a lot of experience is needed to distinguish pure Saqez from good quality.
Phaidyme Company has been specializing in the export of Iranian Saqez of the highest quality for many years.
Types of Iranian Saqez for export
The Saqez that Phaidyme Company exports are:
Product Name | Abbreviation | Product Form |
---|---|---|
Persian Turpentine | - | Liquid |
Mastic Gum | - | Solid |
Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum | NPTCG | Paste-like |
Iran is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of Persian Turpentine and Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG).
Persian Turpentine (Mount Atlas Mastic Liquid)
Before getting to know Persian Turpentine, you should get to know the resin of P. atlantica.
Pistacia atlantica gum (resin of P. atlantica) is an oleoresin gum that is secreted from the outer layer of the inner skin of Pistacia atlantica tree.
By refining the resin of P. atlantica from impurities, Persian Turpentine can be obtained, which is honey-like, thick, and very sticky.
The resin of P. atlantica is cleaned of natural impurities (including small pieces of wood, dry leaves of trees, and pebbles) after extraction in a very clean place by the trained forces of Phaidyme Company, and then the Saqez is packaged for export in a standard way.
In the international markets, the following names are used for wholesale buying and selling of Saqez without considering the difference between Persian Turpentine and resin of P. atlantica:
Row | Business Name |
---|---|
1 | Mount Atlas Mastic Liquid |
2 | Mt Atlas Mastic Liquid |
3 | Resin of Pistacia Atlantica |
4 | Resin of P. atlantica |
Mastic Gum
Characteristics of Mastic Gum (Dried resin of P. atlantica) obtained from Pistacia atlantica subsp. Mutica (PAM) is as follows:
- It has small or large folds
- Its weight is a few grams at most
- It has an appearance with an irregular structure
- It has a semihard doughy state
After harvesting Mastic Gums, we clean the impurities in them in the first step. In addition, we separate those Mastic Gums that have black spots on them.
After removing the impurities, the Mastic Gums are graded based on size.
- Large size
- Small size
After these steps are finished, graded Saqez is placed in standard packages and getting ready for export.
Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG)
Phaidyme’s production team has been trained by Phaidyme’s experts to cook Persian Turpentine in water at standard temperature and conditions in the first step and then refine it to obtain Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG).
During this process that goes through to process Persian Turpentine, two important parameters should be considered:
- Boiling time
- Water Percentage
The quality of all types of (NPTCG)
Two types of NPTCG’s are produced and exported by Phaidyme Company:
Grade A (proper for export)
In each kilogram of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) of grade A, the result of the amount of Persian Turpentine used is the ratio (/) to the amount of water, much more than the result of the same ratio in Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) of grade B.
Grade B
In the production of each kilogram of this type of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG), compared to grade (A), the result of the amount of Persian Turpentine used is less than the amount of water.
Note: We use Persian Turpentine to produce this Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG), which is of very high quality (Mount Atlas Mastic-pure Liquid Resin).
Note: When producing Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG), one of the things that must be paid attention to is the control of the amount of water used, because the amount of water may be more than the amount of Persian Turpentine, and because of this, the quality of the Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) will be very low.
Different types of (NPTCG) in terms of appearance
According to the request of its international customers, Phaidyme Company can export Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) in two ways:
- 1 kg Pieces
- Small pieces that are sliced
The question that arises is what is the difference between these two?
Both types of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) can be used for feed.
But…
One kilogram of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG)
One-kilogram Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) is mostly used for oil extraction.
There is more water in one kilogram of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) compared to the sliced type. Therefore, for its transportation to other countries and also for its storage, certain standards must be observed so that the Saqez does not spoil.
Sliced Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum
The weight of Sliced NPTCG is a few grams, their packaging is made of plastic, and the buyer can supply them in the market of their choice in the shortest time and at a low cost.
Sliced NPTCG loses a lot of its water during the cutting process, in addition, it has a package, which is why Phaidyme Company experts suggest buyers whose customers are supposed to consume Saqez (NPTCG) orally and daily, to buy this type of Saqez.
Sliced Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum spoils more slowly because it contains less water, so it is easier to store and transport them.
Note: The water in each of the Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum is from Persian Turpentine natural water as well as water that is created during the processing operation.
Countries buying Saqez
Most of the customers are from the following countries who buy all kinds of Saqez from Phaidyme:
- Saudi Arabia
- Canada
- Iraq
- Qatar
- United Arab Emirates
- Sweden
- Bahrain
- Turkey
- Jordan
- Kuwait
Different colors of Saqez to export
Color of Persian Turpentine:
Blue or light green
Note: During the time that Persian Turpentine is stored in the warehouse, its color turns slightly to yellowish-green.
Color of Mastic Gum:
- Pale orange
- light yellow
- Clear whitish
Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) color:
White
Fraudulent sale of Persian Turpentine for export
Most companies and sellers who want to sell and export their Saqez fraudulently use the following two methods:
The first method:
Persian Turpentine is extracted from different regions of Iran, each of which has different qualities and then they are combined.
The second method:
Persian Turpentine is mixed with other gums which have a similar appearance to Persian Turpentine.
Of course, there are several other methods that we observed after years of exporting Persian Turpentine.
I will not explain the other methods so that these methods are not promoted and some people are wrongly encouraged to adopt this false and fraudulent culture to sell and export Saqez.
Fraudulent sale of exported (NPTCG)
I mentioned earlier that Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) is obtained by processing Persian Turpentine.
Pure Persian Turpentine with High quality is expensive, which is why a large number of fraudulent sellers, to reduce the cost of producing NPTCG, adopt the method of importing low-quality resin of P. atlantica from different countries, and they mix with a small amount of Persian Turpentine and use it to processing the Saqez.
What is very sad here is that, unfortunately, after combining the Resin of P. atlantica (low-quality) with Persian Turpentine and obtaining this sort of processed Saqez, fraudulent sellers sell it to other customers under the name of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG)!
For example, imagine a Saqez (NPTCG) is obtained and processed with a combination of 45% Persian Turpentine of good quality and 55% resin of P. atlantica that is imported from other countries and is of poor quality. Of course, we have considered these percentages very optimistic here; In most cases, the amount of imported resin of P. atlantica used in the composition is much more than Persian Turpentine.
Fraudulent sale of Turpentine Oil for export
In international markets, Persian Turpentine Oil is known as Turpentine Oil.
Of course, it should be mentioned that many countries produce Turpentine Oil by distilling the resin extracted from living pine trees such as cluster pine (P. pinaster).
The two methods by which Turpentine Oil is produced are as follows:
- Persian Turpentine distillation
- Boiling Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG)
Persian Turpentine or Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) is the raw material for producing turpentine oil, so the quality of turpentine oil depends on these two materials.
Some of those who care more about their interests use Persian Turpentine or Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) of very poor quality to produce turpentine oil.
Because Persian Turpentine is expensive, some producers only use low-quality Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) to produce turpentine oil.
The problem is that they mostly use Paraffin to produce low-quality NPTCG.
during some research, Phaidyme Company experts have found out that some paraffin used in the oil produced from low-quality Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG), is harmful to human health, and we do not recommend its use to anyone.
Note: The oil obtained from low-quality Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) has a yellowish color.
Now, if you intend to buy Persian Turpentine or Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) for oil extraction, Phaidyme experts suggest you use high-quality Persian Turpentine or NPTCG grade A (proper for export) which are 1kg weight.
Properties of turpentine oil
Turpentine oil can be used topically to improve joint pains such as rheumatic and muscle pains.
In many countries, massage therapy centers use turpentine oil to provide more valuable services to their customers.
Price of Saqez per kilogram
The price of each of the Saqez exported by Phaidyme Company depends on the following factors:
Persian Turpentine Price
- Free from impurities that are added to adulterate and change the appearance of Persian Turpentine.
- Appearance characteristics such as color, taste, smell, and taste
- Pistacia atlantica variety from which Persian Turpentine is extracted
Mastic gum Price
- Bigness or smallness
- Degree of dryness
- Not having Mastic Gum with dark colors
- Not having black spots on Mastic Gums
Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum Price
- The amount of Persian Turpentine used in the processing stages and its quality
- Not using chemical impurities used in processing steps to change the color of Natural Persian Turpentine Chewing Gum (NPTCG) from yellow to white.
Chemical composition of Persian Turpentine
The chemical composition of the essential oil (essential oil of Mt. Atlas Mastic) obtained by hydro-distillation of the resin of Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae) was studied by GC and GC/MS.
Row | Chemical compound | Structure |
---|---|---|
1 | α-pinene | |
2 | β-pinene | |
3 | limonene | |
4 | Masticadienonic acid | |
5 | Masticadienolic acid | |
6 | Morolic acid | |
7 | Oleanolic acid | |
8 | Ursonic acid | |
9 | 3-O-acetyl-3-epiisomasticadienolic acid | |

Product: Galbanum essential oil
Monoterpene hydrocarbons constituted the main chemical group in the resin oil, and α–pinene (Alpha-Pinene) was found to be the predominant compound in all samples.
Why does Persian Turpentine stick to the teeth when chewing?
In the process of harvesting Persian Turpentine, you will see that it is naturally sticky. However, the Persian Turpentine loses some of this adhesive property during the processing stages.

Uses of Persian Turpentine in healing wounds
In many countries, treating a wound and controlling its condition is one of the most difficult challenges for healthcare professionals. Especially wounds caused by diabetes, burns, and obesity.
Wounds are divided into the following two categories based on how long they take to heal:
- Acute
- Chronic
Chronic wounds:
Wounds that take from 21 days to several years to heal are called chronic wounds. But we call the wounds that heal with a stitch or dressing as acute wounds, chronic wounds may make the patient helpless; Because it is not clear exactly when the wound will heal and most of the time it takes a long time to heal (disorganized).
Many methods that exist to treat these types of wounds have side effects and the costs of their treatment are high.
The good news is that Persian Turpentine can be used as a completely natural gum containing flavonoids and a convenient solution for treating chronic wounds without any problems.
